Restore (Alphabetical) Order to Your Start and Favorites Menus

By default, Windows XP displays the contents of the Start and Favorites menus in alphabetical order, but sometimes when new programs are installed, they aren’t placed in their proper place alphabetically, or you may have dragged and dropped the shortcuts to rearrange them. You can restore the alphabetical order by editing the registry.

For the Start menu:

  1. Open your favorite registry editor.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu\Menu.
  3. In the right pane, right click the item named Order.
  4. Click Delete.
  5. Close the registry editor.

To do the same for the Favorites menu, substitute this key and follow the same procedure:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites\Menu
.
