How to have Windows 98 know where a local copy of the CAB files are.

  1. Copy the cab files from the windows 98/98SE cd to a local directory on your hard drive. (usally these are located in the C:\windows\options\cabs directory).
  2. Now click on START > RUN and type REDEDIT then click Ok. (This opens the system registry) (BE VERY CAREFULL WHEN EDITING THE SYSTEM REGISTRY. YOU CAN DESTROY YOU SYSTEM AND HAVE TO RELOAD IF YOU SCREW UP!)
  3. Use the search function and look for the following key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: SourcePath
  4. Your source path is most likely pointed at your CD-ROM where windows was install from (normally this is D:\Win98)
  5. Double click on the SourcePath Key.
  6. Replace the exisiting path (again most likely D:\Win98) with the path in step one (whereever you place the cab files)
  7. Click ok and your finished. Close the Registry.

That's it. Now when you try to install a piece of hardware it should automatically find the CAB files so you dont have to either put in your Windows 98/98SE CD-Rom or repoint it to a local directory.
